About Design2Market.mt
Born from FiftySix Design Talks, Design2Market guides Maltese creators from idea to retail via a 5-Stage Journey mapping TRLs, IP milestones & funding.

Design2Market was born out of a clear industry bottleneck identified during the 2026 Cycle 1 of FiftySix Design Talks—a collaborative design forum developed by I+A in partnership with the Valletta Design Cluster. Bringing together a strategic mix of institutional leaders, academic heads, and industry practitioners, the diagnostic workshops tackled a fundamental question: Why do great design ideas in Malta struggle to move from prototype to market?
The conclusion was clear: innovations rarely fail due to a lack of physical tools. Instead, the breakdown happens because designers lack a clear execution path, a supportive framework, and an ethical ecosystem to carry their ideas forward. Governed by the “Robinson Principle”—the discipline of building impactful solutions using only the assets and infrastructure already available on the table—the forum shifted from theory to action. The result is this digital platform: a practical, zero-permission roadmap designed to bridge the gap between creative concept and commercial reality.
Our Framework
To strip away the guesswork of commercialisation, Design2Market translates complex product maturity milestones into a clear, sequential Five-Stage Journey:
- Idea: Nurturing early concepts while enforcing strict documentation and NDA protocols to protect your initial asset.
- Research: Moving into basic research and proof of concept with structured prior art searches and clear national or EU funding decision trees.
- Development: Refining physical prototypes and navigating formal design registrations, backed by a searchable directory of local workshop spaces and manufacturing capabilities.
- Deployment: Navigating manufacturing and scaling through practical licensing guidance and production agreements.
- Market: Reaching final commercialisation with robust enforcement mechanisms to safeguard your intellectual property.
By integrating Technology Readiness Levels (TRL) and Intellectual Property (IP) Milestones, the platform provides transparent entry and exit gates for each phase, ensuring designers are technically validated and legally protected before scaling.
The Human Hub
Because a digital roadmap is only as strong as the community behind it, this platform functions as the primary interface for the Design2Market Support Board. This dynamic point of focus brings together experienced practitioner peers and key institutional representatives to serve as directional guides. By ensuring innovators interact with our baseline digital tools before seeking direct guidance, the Support Board acts as a direct link to the right resources—effectively cutting through bureaucratic loops and helping designers move confidently toward a successful market launch.
The Visionaries Behind the Platform

Valletta Design Cluster (VDC)
Housed within the sensitively restored 17th-century Old Abattoir (Il-Biċċerija l-Antika) in Valletta, the Valletta Design Cluster is a multifunctional cultural and creative hub managed by the Valletta Cultural Agency. The cluster is dedicated to supporting Malta’s cultural and creative operators with a core focus on design, entrepreneurship, and social impact. The state-of-the-art facility features collaborative co-working spaces, a fully equipped makerspace workshop, studio spaces for creative tenants, a specialized food space, and a public-access rooftop green garden that serves as an environmental lung for the city.
I+A
I+A is a multidisciplinary design and architecture studio based in Malta that operates at the intersection of spatial design, branding, and experiential strategy. Championing a philosophy that elevates context, permanence, and contextual dialogue, the firm focuses on creating integrated design interventions rather than isolated structures. Its capabilities span from architectural and interior design to interaction design. By actively initiating public design dialogues and design-to-market methodologies, I+A plays a pivotal role in bridging the gap between innovative conceptual ideas and physical, commercial realities.
